Dinosaur Story Time

Welcome Song: Hands Go Up and Hands Go Down
(to the tune of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star)
Hands go up and hands go down
I can turn around and round
I can hop upon two shoes
I can listen so can you
I can sit, I’ll show you how
Story time is starting now

Song: Zoom Zoom Zoom, We’re Going to the Moon
Zoom zoom zoom, we’re going to the moon
Zoom zoom zoom, we’re going to the moon
If you want to take a trip, climb aboard my rocket ship
Zoom zoom zoom, we’re going to the moon

Early Literacy Tip: Try pronouncing the names of dinosaurs. Being able to say these long, odd sounding words will help to boost your child’s self-confidence and vocabulary skills.

Flannel: Five Enormous Dinosaurs
Five enormous dinosaurs letting out a roar.
One stomped away and then there were four.
Four enormous dinosaurs knocking down a tree. (Clunk!)
One stomped away and then there were three.
Three enormous dinosaurs eating tiger stew. (Ew!)
One stomped away and then there were two.
Two enormous dinosaurs sitting under the sun.
One stomped away and then there was one.
One enormous dinosaur having no fun.
He stomped away and then there were none.

Wiggle Rhyme: Watch Out for the Bugs (to the tune of Jingle Bells)
Clap your hands, stomp your feet
Wiggle all around
Throw your hands up in the air and now let’s touch the ground
Touch your head, touch your hips, give yourself a hug
Now sit down upon the floor
But watch out for the bugs!! (stamp out the bugs)

Book: Edwina: The Dinosaur Who Didn’t Know She Was Extinct by Mo Willems

You can’t go wrong with reading Mo Willems!

Song: Dino-Pokey
You put your claws in,
You take your claws out,
You put your claws in,
And you scratch them all about.
You do the dino-pokey and you turn yourself around.
That’s what it’s all about!
(Feet in // Feet out // Stomp them all about)
(Teeth in // Teeth out // Chomp them all about)
(Tail in // Tail out // Wag it all about)

Action Rhyme: Dinosaurs
Dinosaurs lived long ago.
Some walked, (stomp feet)
Some swam, (pretend to swim)
Some flew, you know. (flap arms)
Some were big, (hold hand high)
Some were small, (hold hand low)
Some were gigantic (stretch arms out wide)
And very tall! (stretch both arms up high)

Some librarians love pop-up books at story time but I found it a little cumbersome. I’m not sure if I’ll try another one …

Song: Back in the Jungle
Back in the jungle many years ago,
I had a friend his name was Joe and he had a lot of pets.
He had creepy ones, crawly ones, big and small.
But my favorite pet of all was a lion that went like this (*roar*)
(Crocodile that went like this [*snap snap snap*])
(Frog that went like this [*ribbit, ribbit, ribbit*])
(Monkey that went like this [*ooo ooo aah aah*])

Egg Shakers: Shake It by Sally’s Music Circle

Action Rhyme: Dinosaur, Dinosaur
Dinosaur, dinosaur, turn around
Dinosaur, dinosaur, touch the ground
Dinosaur, dinosaur, reach up high
Dinosaur, dinosaur, wink one eye
Dinosaur, dinosaur, touch your nose
Dinosaur, dinosaur, touch your toes
Dinosaur, dinosaur, slap your knees
Dinosaur, dinosaur, sit down please

Goodbye Song: Clap, Clap, Clap Your Hands
Clap, clap, clap your hands, clap your hands together
Clap, clap, clap your hands, clap your hands together

Tap, tap, tap your feet // Wave, wave, wave goodbye
