Welcome Song: Hands Go Up and Hands Go Down
(to the tune of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star)
Hands go up and hands go down

Song: I’m a Little Penguin (to the tune of I’m a Little Teapot)
I’m a little penguin,
Black and white.
Short and wobbly, (hold up fingers close together)
An adorable sight. (hand over heart)
I can’t fly at all, (flap arms)
But I love to swim, (making swimming motions)
So I’ll waddle to the water (waddle forward)
And dive right in! (jump)

Book: Up and Down by Oliver Jeffers
I’ve read this book twice now for penguin story time and I’m not sure I’ll do it again. The grown ups in the room seem to like and appreciate it but I’m not so sure the kids do!

Book: Grumpy Pants by Claire Messer
Cute, simple story about a grumpy penguin who sheds his grumpy clothing and feels better after he counts to three and takes a relaxing bath with his duckie. (The kids loved when he shed his grumpy underpants.)
Flannel: Five Perky Penguins
Five perky penguins stood on the shore,
One waddled off and now there are four.
Four perky penguins looked out to sea,
One went fishing and now there are three.
Three perky penguins said, “What can we do?”
One went for a swim and now there are two.
Two perky penguins sat in the sun,
One got a sunburn and now there is one.
One perky penguin said, “This is no fun!”
He waddled home and now there are none.

Egg Shakers: Shake It by Sally’s Music Circle
And we also did an additional egg shaker song this week!
I found the song Doin’ the Penguin on the “Sesame Street: Hot! Hot! Hot! Dance Songs” CD. I played the song off of Spotify on my phone. I should have burned it to a CD because it really wasn’t loud enough for all the activity it required. (And we had to compete with egg shaker noise!) I’ll do this next time. I would definitely use the song again. It was very fun and added another element to our story time. (In hindsight I should have tested it out on the outreach kids first. They would have loved it!)
Book: Playful Little Penguins by Tony Mitton; illustrated by Guy Parker-Rees
Song: Snow on the Rooftops (to the tune of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star)
Snow on the rooftops (make pointed roof shape with arms)
Snow on the trees (hold arms out like tree branches)
Snow on the green grass (wave hands over the ground like you’re touching grass)
And snow on me! (point to self)
Snow on my mittens (hold up hands; wiggle fingers)
Snow on my nose (touch nose)
Snow on my head (touch head)
And snow on my toes (touch toes)
Twirling, swirling, whirling down (spin in circle)
Down and down and down and down (bring hands down and touch the ground)

We wave goodbye like this.
We wave goodbye like this.
We clap our hands for all our friends.
