Jungle Story Time

Welcome Song: Hands Go Up and Hands Go Down
(to the tune of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star)
Hands go up and hands go down
I can turn around and round
I can hop upon two shoes
I can listen so can you
I can sit, I’ll show you how
Story time is starting now

Song: This Old Man
This old man,
He played one, (hold up one finger)
He played knick knack on my thumb.
With a knick knack (slap knees)
paddy wack (clap hands)
give a dog a bone, (hand jive)
This old man came rolling home. (roll hands)
Two … on my shoe // Three … on my knee // Four .. on the floor // Five … on the hive

Book: Giraffes Can’t Dance by Giles Andreade & Guy Parker-Rees

giraffes-cant-dance

I love this book so much. Rhyming stanzas make it a great read aloud and the message (everyone can dance when they hear music that they love) can’t be beat.

Song: Song cube (I’m a Little Teapot)

Flannel: Down in the Jungle
Down in the jungle where nobody goes,
There’s a big, fat elephant washing his toes.
With a rub-a-dub here, and a rub-a-dub there,
That’s the way he washes his toes!

Down in the jungle when nobody’s there,
There’s a great big lion washing his hair.
With a rub-a-dub here, and a rub-a-dub there,
That’s the way he washes his hair!

Down in the jungle if you look in the trees,
There’s a cheeky monkey washing her knees.
With a rub-a-dub here, and a rub-a-dub there,
That’s the way she washes her knees!

Down in the jungle if you care to check,
There’s a very long snake washing his neck.
With a rub-a-dub here, and a rub-a-dub there,
That’s the way he washes his neck!

Down at the river if you look underneath,
There’s a great big tiger brushing her teeth.
With a rub-a-dub here, and a rub-a-dub there,
That’s the way she brushes her teeth!

Song: Baby Shark
Baby shark do do do do do do (shark mouth with two fingers)
Baby shark do do do do do do
Baby shark do do do do do do
Baby shark

Other verses:
Mama Shark (shark mouth with hands connected at the wrists)
Daddy Shark (shark mouth with whole arms)
Grandma Shark (shark mouth like mama shark but with fists)
Shark attack (snap arms overhead)
Swim away (swimming motion with arms)
Safe at last (jazz hands)

Book: The Jungle Run by Tony Mitton and Guy Parker-Rees

I didn’t realize until I said the name out loud that Guy Parker-Rees had illustrated our first two jungle books. He must be a jungle animal expert!

Wiggle Rhyme: Watch Out for the Bugs (to the tune of Jingle Bells)
Clap your hands, stomp your feet
Wiggle all around
Throw your hands up in the air and now let’s touch the ground
Touch your head, touch your hips, give yourself a hug
Now sit down upon the floor
But watch out for the bugs!! (stamp out the bugs)

Song: Ten Little Crocodiles
One little, two little, three little crocodiles,
Four little, five little, six little crocodiles,
Seven little, eight little, nine little crocodiles,
Ten little crocodiles hatch from eggs.

Ten little, nine little, eight little crocodiles,
Seven little, six little, five little crocodiles,
Four little, three little, two little crocodiles,
One little crocodile swims away.

Song: Mr. Sun
Oh Mr. Sun. Sun. Mr. golden sun, (arms over head)
Please shine down on me. (move hands back and forth and down)
Oh Mr. Sun. Sun. Mr. golden sun, (arms over head)
Hiding behind a tree. (hide face behind hands)
These little children are asking you. (point to the children)
To please come out so they can play with you. (gesture ‘come here’ with hands)
Oh Mr. Sun. Sun. Mr. golden sun. (arms over head)
Please shine down on me. (move hands back and forth and down)

Song: If You’re Happy and You Know It
Flap your wings
Beat your chest
Give a roar
Do all three

I chose my three favorites from If You’re Happy and You Know It: Jungle Edition by James Warhola.

Goodbye Song: We Wave Goodbye Like This (to the tune of The Farmer in the Dell)
We wave goodbye like this.
We wave goodbye like this.
We clap our hands for all our friends.
We wave goodbye like this.
