Winter Story Time (2019)

Welcome to our first story time of the new year!

Welcome Song: Clap and Sing Hello (to the tune of The Farmer in the Dell)
We clap and sing hello,
We clap and sing hello,
With our friends at story time,
We clap and sing hello!

We tap and sing hello (tap knees) //
We stretch and sing hello (stretch arms up) //
We wave and sing hello (wave)

Song: Watch Out for the Bugs (to the tune of Jingle Bells)
Clap your hands, stomp your feet,
Wiggle all around.
Throw your hands up in the air and now let’s touch the ground.
Touch your head, touch your hips,
Give yourself a hug.
Now sit down upon the floor …
But watch out for the bugs! (stamp them out and scream)

I got this song from a children’s librarian I used to work with. It’s always a hit.

BookMouse’s First Snow by Lauren Thompson; illustrated by Buket Erdogan

Mouse and Poppa explore all the fun things to do on a snow day.

Flannel: Five Little Snowflakes
One little snowflake with nothing to do,
Along came another and now there are two.
Two little snowflakes laughing with me,
Along came another and now there are three.
Three little snowflakes looking for some more,
Along came another and now there are four.
Four little snowflakes dancing a jive,
Along came another and now there are five.
Five little snowflakes having so much fun,
Out came the sun and now there are none.

Popcorn kernels, (wave scarves overhead)
In the pot. (make scarves ‘disappear’ by bunching them in their fists)

Song/Scarves: We Wave Our Scarves Together (to the tune of The Bear Went Over the Mountain)

We wave them low, (sing/wave low)
We wave them in the middle,
Because it’s fun to do!

We throw our scarves together,
We throw our scarves together,
We throw our scarves together,
Because it’s fun to do!

We throw them high, (throw/sing high)
We throw them low, (throw/sing low)
We throw them in the middle,
Because it’s fun to do!

Song: Snowflakes Dance Around (to the tune of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star)
Snowflakes, snowflakes dance around,
Snowflakes, snowflakes touch the ground.
Snowflakes, snowflakes in the air,
Snowflakes, snowflakes everywhere.
Snowflakes, snowflakes dance around,
Snowflakes, snowflakes touch the ground.

I found this song on Perry Public Library’s now defunct website. I miss it.

I didn’t realize until I was in the moment that I put two songs next to each other that used Twinkle, Twinkle as their tune. *sigh*

Egg Shakers: Shake It by Sally’s Music Circle

I got a new phone for Christmas and it doesn’t have a sound jack! So I played it off my phone directly and it was super quiet. So I sang along to the music. We made do but I’ll be sure to bring my old phone with me next week.

Book: Snowy, Blowy Winter by Bob Raczka; illustrated by Judy Stead

Short, rhyming book about winter activities. One of the few books about winter I’ve found that don’t end with a spring scene!
